Where to stay in Uttarakhand

Hotels, homestays, camps, ashrams and government accommodation

This guide explains the types of stay. It does not list specific properties, prices or ratings. For current availability use the official or reputable booking sites linked below.

Hotels and resorts

Available in nearly every tourist town. Look for properties with parking and clear road access, and read recent reviews on a reputable booking site.

Homestays and guesthouses

Good for villages and treks. They offer home-cooked food and local advice. Confirm last-mile road access, heating and Wi-Fi with the host.

Camps and treks

Use camps run by licensed operators with clear safety standards. Avoid sleeping in unofficial sites or near riverbeds.

Ashrams and dharamshalas

Common in Haridwar, Rishikesh and along pilgrim routes. They are simple, often have rules about timings, and may require advance booking.

Government accommodation

GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) and KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) run rest houses in many places. Forest rest houses are available for eligible visitors through the forest department.

Choosing an area

  • Mussoorie: near Library or Landour for quiet.
  • Nainital: Tallital or Mallital depending on walking.
  • Rishikesh: Tapovan for cafes, further out for quiet.
  • Char Dham: choose the base town for the road head, not the temple itself in peak season.

When should I book?
